Why When?

Why when
Middle-aged men
See young women
Are they drawn to them?
Tis the fear
Of the Reaper, who draweth slowly near.

Tis a dread
Of being dead,
Of dust
That causes them
To satiate their lust
In thought and sometimes deed
For the seed
Lives on
After we are gone.

Great poem. I think all of us, in some way, are trying to thwart the Grim Reaper, though we may not recognise it.

Thank you. I’m delighted that you loved my poem. I am sure you are correct when you point to the “grasping” “of those last moments of youth”. Perhaps it is also a reluctance to admit that one is no longer young. Best – Kevin

I agree, but isn’t it funny that youth is a state of mind. I saw a video of a female body builder who was 74 years young the other day. She was in magnificent shape without looking distorted by her muscular mass. She claimed she had not been in such great condition when she was 20 and didn’t start until she was in her mid-sixties. She wasn’t worried about her mortality. The rare one who gets it: We live every day according to what our mind conceives.

That is an interesting story/observation. I am sure you are right that to some extent at least “youth is a state of mind”. In the case of the body builder, she remains in good physical condition. However even when the body shows signs of ageing there are those who remain mentally alert/as sharp as the proverbial tack.
