In This Forest Glade

In this forest glade
I think on the shade.
All mens desires
For women and empires
Fade.

The shout
Of the brave
Is lost in the grave.
And all fires burn out
In the end,
Be they lover or friend.

There Was A Young Man From Whitehall

There was a young man from Whitehall
Who said “all empires fall”.
He wore a threadbare suit
And owned only one boot,
But his name I don’t recall.

Made In Britain

Everything will fail.

On my new shower rail

is written

“made in Britain”.

Kipling is out of fashion

yet there remains a passion

for things made here.

Caesar’s ghost stands near.

The sneer

On Ozymandias’s face

Has been wiped from it’s place

Leaving only sand

And barren land.

Everything will fail.

On my new shower rail

is written

“made in Britain”.

Yesterday I purchased a new shower rail and was pleased to discover that it was made in Britain. This sparked the above poem.
