May

A mermaid
Most staid
Oft times played
On the seashore
Until one day
The waves carried her away
In a different kind of play.
Now she will dance in May
No more.

Men Surf The Brine

Men surf the brine.
As a line
Of mermaids throng
The sand. Their song
Odysseus heard long ago.

Many men were lost
For they failed to count the cost
And drowned. Twas always so
And the wise well know
With Sirens not to play
And with Odysseus stay
Lashed to the mast
Lest they drown in the ocean vast.

“The Odyssey isn’t relevant today”
The stupid say
But only look behind
The text and you will find
A very modern tale
Of the sailor who with a mermaid played
And for his stupidity paid.

I Met A Mermaid

I met a mermaid
Who said “be
Not staid,
But come play with me
In yonder raging sea.

We will go
With the flow.
Do not say
No,
For you may have your way
With me
In yonder raging sea”.

So
I went with the flow
And both mermaid and me
Made free,
And drowned in that sea.

A Long Way Back

The barefoot girl who never was
Because
The beach
Remained out of reach
To me.
I hear the sea
And feel the sand
But I can not command
Your hand into mine,
For I find
That you are a mermaid of my mind,
Or perhaps half real,
Though one can not a kiss seal
With a middle-aged man’s hazy recollection
Of a perfection of skin
And imagined sin.

Mermaid and Merman

“Our love is deep as the sea,
And There is such depth to you and me.
We go so far down,
We will in passion drown”,
(the mermaid said,
As she wriggled her toes,
On the ocean’s bed).

“Poseidon knows,
How the tide comes and goes,
My pretty rose”,
(I said,
With a shake of my head,
As I departed our briny bed).

Book Review: “The Ocean’s Lullaby” By Victoria Zigler

This review is of “The Ocean’s Lullaby” by Victoria Zigler.
Disclaimer : I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

The Ocean’s Lullaby does, as the title suggests have a strong ocean theme. The poems in this collection range from the humorous to verses which bring a tear to the eye. Many of the poems are suitable for children, while others will be more readily appreciated by an adult audience.
One of the poems which particularly charmed me is “If I was A Mermaid” which runs thus:
“If I was a mermaid,

I wouldn’t need to sail.

I’d swim through the world’s waters,

With a flick of my silvery tail.

If I was a mermaid,

Who lived beneath the sea,

I’d zoom through the water,

So fast you’d never catch me”.
While the above will, I think appeal in particular to a younger audience, the touching simplicity of the verse will, I think bring a smile to the face of many an older reader.

Victoria also tackles serious issues, for example in her short poem entitled “Wounding Words”:
“Wounding words, like vicious knives,

Rip to shreds our pleasant lives,

Until no joy or hope survives,

And only pain and sorrow thrives”.
We have, I am sure all experienced what is so pithily expressed in the above piece.

Among my favourite poems in the humorous category are “When Words Don’t Mean The Same” and “When North Wind Does Blow”.
I have read “The Ocean’s Lullaby” several times and recommend it as a pleasant and sometimes thought provoking read.

09f242d3toriz

I am pleased to publish the below announcement by my friend, author Victoria (Tori) Zigler:

For those who don’t know, I write poetry, as well as books for children of various ages.

Back in 2012, I started publishing my books in multiple eBook formats. Then, in early 2015, I decided it was way past time I started making my books available in paperback for those who still prefer physical copies of books.

Now, more than a year later, I’m pleased to be able to report that I’m all caught up with my backlist, and every book of mine for which the publication date has been and gone, is now available not just in multiple eBook formats, but also in paperback too.

The eBooks are available via Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, Kobo, and the other places Smashwords distributes to. Plus, if your local library supports eBook lending, you may be able to find my books as eBooks there (or request that your library orders copies).

The paperbacks are available via CreateSpace, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and any other places CreateSpace books are available from, including any libraries happy to order copies.

Future titles will also be made available as paperbacks as well as eBooks.
